“In The Waterway”

Digital Water Safari

You just took a dive into an urban waterway where the ecological water quality is in good order, which is why you also saw the more rare species. It is a collage of organisms that already exist in the brackish water directly in and around Amsterdam - with the exception of the European Sturgeon.

The water quality is still not good in many places, and nature including design is one important way to improve this. In the city, for example, you can create a nature-inclusive quay or a nature-friendly shore, or something in between. Preferably with a healthy, robust soil biotope. Floating gardens with structures above and below the water also form a new biotope, because they offer support, food and safety where they used to be lacking.

The digital water safari 'In De Waterweg' was created and drawn by Inge Jansen (Fragmonia). Amber Beernink (Novamber) created the concept and content as an extension of her floating garden project De Waterkaravaan.

Inspiration came from the school poster 'In Sloot En Plas' and other work by Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek (1873 - 1944). Experts provided feedback for this water safari. For the videos that you can click on, image makers have made their clips available.
