Walk-in garden

Hortus ambulare in

An open floating shore aloud with Craybar

Opening

This garden also offers a gentle slope that runs from above water to below water. There is an opening at the bottom of the slope so that a frog or salamander can walk into it from the water.

Collaboration with nature

The American Crayfish is a pest in large parts of the Netherlands: they eat aquatic plants and toss in the soil and banks, which makes the water cloudy, prevents sunlight from entering and thus aquatic plants disappear. Nature-friendly banks are the best solution to this pest.
Waardenburg Ecology came up with the 'Craybar' (crab counter) to combat this lobster effectively and in an animal-friendly way. They are lured to a trap at the bottom of the water. Once inside, they can't get out because crayfish can only swim backwards. They then end up in a floating bin that can be closed or opened. When the tank is open, natural predators (such as herons and coots) can eat the lobsters. A smart, natural and low-maintenance solution.

The Craybar is designed in such a way that only lobsters are caught. The crayfish are lured by automatically feeding them a little bit, then they can no longer swim out of the trap, which is underwater at the bottom. Other animals can do that. Via a flexible tube, it runs into the Corten steel basin: a kind of snack bar for the heron, stork, grebe, coot, seagull and otter, who then also learn that this crayfish makes a good snack.
