Foam Garden

Lots of cavities with gabions and glass foam

Wooden frame with willow weaves for aquatic plants

This garden also has many cavities, even at the micro level. The wooden frame made from Amsterdam canal wood forms the basis. Four gabions for aquatic plants hang along the edges. These can be made from untreated steel because they are completely submerged. Fish can also hide in them from predators. Because light transmission is crucial and the water is often cloudy, the bottom has been raised. A bed of hemp cloth, pond soil, lime and shells (and sometimes some peach pits and lava chunks) has been applied to this.

Floating garden with glass foam

The AQF Eco-Floatland® is manufactured by Nautilus and contains glass foam chunks, a lightweight, porous material made from recycled glass. This glass foam has been optimised to float longer.

It is packed in mesh panels, a fine-mesh fabric, coconut fibre fabric, and cork edges. Aqua-Flora plants are placed in the steel recesses, with their roots between the glass foam. Between these foam chunks are cavities for plant roots and organisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and algae) that live around these roots and contribute to water quality.
