Sheltered areas above and below water

This garden has all kinds of sheltered spots, large and small. The wooden frame with a plank bottom forms a “tub”. Along the edges, 14 pond baskets made of woven willow twigs hang underwater. These were made by the Willow Crew under the direction of Sjarifah Meijerman. Here you will find, for example, Yellow- and Fringed Water Lily, Bog- Floating- and Shining Pondweed, Common Hornwort.

Willow branches are woven between the bottom boards, and cork sheets supplied by DobberWeelde float on top, held together with a 100% biobased binder (natural glue). We drilled many holes in these sheets to reduce the buoyancy of the cork sheets so that the marsh plants remain wet and the plant roots can grow through them. Fibre cloths made of a jute-wool blend (from Aalsburg) lie on top of these cork sheets.
On top, you can see coconut fibre tubs and woven “egg baskets” filled with pond soil, crushed shells and lime. The willow egg baskets were made by the Willow Crew led by Jasper Riehm (alias ThatWeirdPlantGuy). They were then lovingly cultivated in a safe environment by Sara Botschuiver (Waterbaten) with a wide variety of riparian and, in particular, marsh plants.
